Results From The Old School Boxing Promotions Card On February 8th!

Here are the results from the Old School Boxing Promotions card that took place last night at Tyson's Playground in Vienna, VA.

(Photos by Daniel Cork)

This is the report from ringside photographer Daniel Cork.

In the main event, Dusty Hernandez Harrison over Les Sherrington relatively early in round 2 (not time was announced). Sherrington had been down once in round 1, and fight was stopped after the second knockdown of round 2. The one “clubbing” shot in there is the first knockdown or round 2; the other two were body-blocked from my angle.

Steven Lopez upsetting the debuting Robert Shackleford by majority decision, 2x 39-37 and 38-38. Really good fight, Lopez just consistently busier throughout.

Nathaniel Davis by majority decision, 38-38 and 40-36 twice over Varon Moe Webb. Really solid fight.

Ian Cokley won a majority decision over Leo Alcantara, in what was announced (somehow) as a “unanimous decision” with scores 38-37, 38-37, and 38-38. Cokley was down in round 2.

Dante Cox by stoppage over Christopher Johnson, 0:42 of round 3. Good back-and-forth in the first couple of rounds, but Cox wore down Johnson in the 3rd.

Mike Balogun stopping Adnan Buharalija at the end of round 1. After the 10-second warning, the two followed through on an exchange, Buharalija stooped downwards. So, Balogun did clearly seem to hit him on the back of the head.

Mazium Akdeniz stopping Elliot Brown at 2:02 of round 1.

Akeem Jackson by stoppage at 2:04 of round 4, Anthony Dave having been down twice, once in the 3rd and again in the 4th.

Gary Russell Jr. Defends His WBC Featherweight Title One More Time!

Gary Russell Jr. defeated Tugstsogt Nyambayar by twelve-round unanimous decision in the main event Saturday night at the PPL Center, in Allentown, Penn.

Russell won by the scores of 118-110, 117-111 and 116-112.

Russell's conditioning, speed and experience was the winning factor in this fight. Nyambayar was never hurt by Russell at any moment during this championship bout, but his lack of experience didn't allow him to adjust his game plan.

“We put the work in every day in the gym,” said Russell. “I’m a perfectionist. We knew we had a very tough opponent and I knew he was going to bring his physical best. He had everything to gain and nothing to lose. We just focused and showed I’m one of the longest reigning champions for a reason.

“The difference was ring generalship, hand speed and boxing IQ. He only had 11 pro fights, of course he was an Olympic silver medalist, but he only had those 11 pro fights. I’ve had over 30 and I think my experience was enough to overcome and win this fight.”

“It wasn’t my night,” said Nyambayar. “He was the better man tonight. I didn’t do my work the way I was supposed to. He is a great champion who fought a great fight. I made a mistake by waiting for him during the fight. I’d love the rematch if I can get it.”

This could be the last title defense for WBC 126-lb champion Russell Jr. (31-1, 18 KOs) as he looks to move up in weight classes to compete with fighters such as Leo Santa Cruz, Gervonta Davis and even a grudge match with Vasyl Lomachenko. Russell definitely has very good hand speed but it's his punching power that would be questioned at the 130 and135 pound weight divisions.
