Amateur boxing in District Heights Maryland

For the last three years at the District Heights Rec Center located at 2000 Marbury Dr in District Heights, MD  Coach "Mac" Rodgers has been running the D-BLOCK boxing gym. The D standing for District Heights and BLOCK standing for the square boxing ring. The gym is for kids as well as adults but Coach Mac says he has more kids than adults coming to the gym to workout. The gym is at no cost at all and this seems to be good for the kids and their parents. With the use of the gym, the kids have been learning the sport of boxing and a few of them have even been competing in amateur competitions.On an average day it is about 10 to 15 kids coming in to workout with Coach Mac and Coach Marvin. Coach Marvin is a strength and conditioning coach. He has been with D-BLOCK for the past 3 months. For now the gym is working on getting the kids in shape with running and exercising. The coaches have the kids working together in groups to develop their social skills to learn how to work as a team.  With the gym being free, that means the coaches take time out of their own schedule during the week to come work with these kids for little or nothing at all. When Coach Mac is at the gym with the kids.  He treats all of them as if they were his own.

Today's workout with Dusty Harrison and Ty Barnett

Today Ty Barnett and his trainer Andrew Council came to the Old School Boxing Gym to get in a early  mid day workout. Dusty and dad/trainer Buddy Harrison normally would workout 5 days a week and at least 3 of those days would be early workouts when Dusty gets out of school at 11am. Today Dusty and Ty decided to give each other a few sparring rounds. They seemed to be well on track for their March 10th fights at the Washington DC Convention Center. Dusty being 3-0 will be looking for his 4th win and Ty 18-2 heading for his 19th win. Another Win for Fernando Guerrero

Saturday night at the Grand Oasis Resort in Cancun Quintana Roo, Mexico. Maryland Super Middleweight Fernando Guerrero 23-1 (18KO's) had a TKO win against Canadian Jason Naugler 18-16-1 (11KO's). Referee stopped the bout at 2:36 in the 4th round after Naugler took too many hard punches from Guerrero.

Klitschko vs Chisora vs Haye

WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko 44-2 (40KO's) keeps his WBC title after defeating Dereck Chisora 15-2 (9KO's) in a 12 round unanimous decision. Judges score the bout: Robin Dolpierre 118-110,
Bela Florian 119-111, and Atta Eddie Pappoe 118-110.

That fight was only a warm up for Dereck Chisora. David Haye showed up at the post fight press conference and called Chisora a loser. Chisora confronted Haye and Haye smashed a bottle across Chisora's head. The two men were pulled apart and this is when Chisora repeatedly said " I will shoot David Haye." The Klitschko Team stood back and watched the whole outburst from the two men. They also said " With the bad experiences we had with British fighters we will now look for other countries."

Williams vs Ishida

Last night Showtime boxing presented live boxing from the American Bank Center Arena in Corpus Christi, Texas. Paul Williams 41-2 (27KO's) swarmed Nobuhiro Ishida 24-7-2 (9KO's) with punches. After 12 rounds of boxing all three judges scored the bout 120-108 to give Paul Williams the unanimous decision.

IBF Lightweight Champion Tavoris Cloud 25-0 (19KO's) remains undefeated after a close split decision win over former WBA World Champ Gabriel Campillo 24-4-1-(8KO's). Cloud dropped Campillo twice in the first round. Campillo came back hard in the second and cut Cloud in the third.  Judges scored the bout 116-110, 114-112 for Cloud and 115-111 for Campillo.

Chris Arreola 35-2 (30KO's) showed why he is the # 1 Heavyweight in the WBC. Arreola faced off with Eric Molina 18-2-(14KO's). Both fighters came out moving well but Arreola landed the best shot. He connected a right hand to the temple and put Molina out in the first round.

Gamboa vs Rios

For both fighters this will be the biggest competition each has ever faced. Gamboa dominated the featherweight class and decides to jump up two weight classes to take on Brandon Rios. Rios lost his title back in December when he failed to make the 135 pound limit up in New York against John Murray. Yuriorkis Gamboa is an offensive fighter that never had to worry about getting hit because he is so fast. Will this style work with the bigger and stronger Brandon Rios? This is something that the Gamboa camp will have to think about. April 14 on HBO from Mandalay Bay Event Center in Las Vegas will show who trained for who.
