Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. John Riel Casimero & Undercard Weights From Carson, California

Casimero and Rigondeaux are set for their 12-round main event that will be on the Showtime telecast from the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. 

John Riel Casimero came in at 118 lbs. while Guillermo Rigondeaux stepped on the scale at 117½ lbs.

In the co-feature, Gary Antonio Russell (18-0, 12 KOs), of Capitol Heights, Maryland, officially weighed 116¾ while Puerto Rico’s Emmanuel Rodriguez (19-2, 12 KOs) came in at 118 lbs for WBA bantamweight interim title contest.

For the opener of Showtime’s three-bout broadcast, set to begin at 10 p.m. EDT and 7 p.m. PDT, Rau’shee Warren (18-3, 4 KOs, 1 NC), a former IBO/WBA bantamweight champ from Cincinnati, stepped on the scale at 117½ lbs. in preparation for his 10-round bout against Damien Vazquez (15-2-1, 8 KOs). Las Vegas’ Vazquez weighed 117¼ lbs. 

The World Boxing Association (WBA) Cleans Up A Messy Situation, Title Remains Vacant!

The WBA has announced that Gabriel Maestre (4-0, 3 KOs) has been stripped of the interim world welterweight title he won with much controversy on Saturday, August 7th. The Venezuelan was gifted with a outrageous unanimous decision over Mykal Fox (22-3, 5 KOs) in Minneapolis. 

The flip-flopped scorecard from judge Gloria Martinez Rizzo, who wrote down the score 117-110 in Maestre's favor, was suspended indefinitely. Her suspension was originally six months, but the racist content found on Rizzo's social profiles warranted a longer suspension for the judge. 

The confirmation for a rematch from the WBA give the promoters from both sides 30 days to negotiate an agreement. 

What's Really Behind The Outrageous Decision Against Mykal Fox!

On Saturday night, August 7th at The Armory in Minneapolis, three judges had a great opportunity to build recognition by being part of the nationally televised Gabriel Maestre vs. Mykal Fox WBA interim welterweight title bout.

Fox was a late replacement, filling in for Cody Crowley, who tested positive for Covid-19 two weeks out from the fight. Before the opening bell, Fox’s trainer/father, Troy Fox noticed that Maestre’s gloves were not properly taped. Referee Mark Nelson openly questioned how the commission had signed off on the illegal taping. Maestre’s gloves were re-taped to meet standards. 

Fox, 25, of Forestville, MD had clearly out boxed the 34-year-old highly recognized decorated amateur and two-time Olympian of Venezuelan. Fox had no problem keeping Maestre at the end of his long jab, scoring with ease during the entire title fight. Fox even landed a perfect counter left hand that dropped Maestre in the second-round. Maestre may have been aggressive in one or two rounds, but not even close enough to winning a round decisively.  The time had arrived to hear the announcement of the winner, Fox looked with confidence when he heard it was a unanimous decision. 

Judge Mariano scored it 115-112, David Singh 114-113, while Martinez-Rizzo had it, incredibly, 117-110, all for Maestre. This definitely wasn't the outcome the live crowd, television commentators and television audiences was expecting to hear. Fox clearly had a look of unbelief in his facial expression.

"When the first score was read Mykes face twisted up immediately but I assured him that was him. The second was close too but I told him don't worry about that bro. That's you. When they read the final score, I reassured him that no one saw Maestre winning by a margin like that. When they said and still undefeated I immediately knew something was wrong. I immediately started fuming at the end when they put the camera on me I made sure it was seen that I said "This is some bullshit!!"

Boxing judge Gloria Martinez-Rizzo, who scored it 117-110 has a lot to answer for, and not just for her recent flip-flopped scorecard.  When things of this nature happens it doesn't always automatically causes the race card to be dealt. It definitely is an eye opener for many people to look further into the history of an individual. In this day and time the go to platform is social media. People seem to be attracted to social media outside of their regular professional life. Sometimes a person shows who they really are or want to be. In this case a boxing judge showed her true self. 

BoxingScene.com columnist Corey Erdman went through a series of past tweets that Martinez-Rizzo posted on the website through her personal account, many of which ranged from being racially insensitive to straight out racist. There were posts about two widely known African Americans in which she referred to Michelle Obama, the former First Lady, “monkey face,” and another telling basketball star Lebron James “go to back to the stable.”. There are many more questionable posts that Martinez-Rizzo has on her social media outlet.

That's just getting things started win it comes down to the questionable scorecard. Now it comes down to conflicts of interest. Gloria Martinez-Rizzo is the wife of Ricardo Rizzo, who works frequently with the WBA. The WBA granted Martinez-Rizzo its “Judge of the Year” award in 2019. More insightful information came out revealing that a member of Maestre’s corner, Marcelino Castillo, has ties with the WBA. 

Shortly after the lopsided results of this contest, WBA president Gilberto Jesus Mendoza issued a statement promising to conduct an investigation. Hopefully in favor of Mykal Fox an immediate rematch will be ordered.

Lamont Roach Jr. Puts On Strong Performance In Los Angeles!

Lamont Roach defeated Daniel Rosas by second-round TKO on the undercard of Diaz vs. Fortuna at the Banc of California Stadium in Las Angeles, CA. 

It was the power of Roach that made the difference in this scheduled 10-round contest. Roach was the aggremx ssor in the opening round by landing his jab early and then power shots to the body of Rosas. Roach finished the first-round by landing a nice left hook that backed Rosas into the ropes and followed it up with more hard body shots. It was more of the same in round two. Roach saw Rosas was hurt from the body work so he continued to land more shots. The final punch was a left hook to the body that sent Rosas buckling over to cause the referee to stop the contest at 2:14 of the second-round. 

Lamont Roach Jr. improves his record to (21-1-1, 9 KO's) while Daniel Rosas falls to (22-5-1, 14 KO's).

"I felt strong and confident going into this fight. When I landed that left hook I knew I had him hurt. After I landed that shot I picked it up and didn’t let him get himself together. I landed more shots to get him out of there.

"I have always been cut up. It's the system we have put together with my strength and conditioning coach and doctor for this fight.

"I feel like I am the aggressor even in my past fights but I learned from the Jamel Herring fight that I should have been more aggressive earlier in that fight. I could have got the win." 

"My dad tells me that my left hook is my best punch but I think my straight right hand is my best shot because if I get the chance to land it I will hurt somebody. This fight I saw I hurt him with the a left hook then the body work finished him off."

Gervonta "Tank" Davis Carries Power Up To Capture 140 lb WBA Title!

Gervonta "Tank" Davis remains undefeated and now is a three-division champion by defeating Mario Barrios by 11th round TKO to capture the WBA junior welterweight title. Davis' record now stands at 25-0, 24 KO's. 

Barrios led for much of the early and middle rounds by using his jab, but the eighth round changed things. Davis dropped Barrios with a right hook to score his first knockdown, then got another a few seconds later. Barrios managed to finish the round, but Davis was the aggressor from there. 

Davis knocked down Barrios again midway through the 11th round, this time landing a body punch that left his opponent doubled over and on his knees. Barrios again stayed in the fight, but not for long. Davis found his distance once again and landed another hard shot that send Barrios off balance causing the referee to wave the fight off. Barrios suffers his first defeat and falls to 26-1, 17 KO's.

Baltimore, MD's Gervonta “Tank” Davis 24-0, (23 KO's) and undefeated WBA Super Lightweight Champion Mario “El Azteca” Barrios 26-0, (17 KO's) took part in a media workout to kick off fight week at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, GA on Wednesday ahead of this Saturday’s SHOWTIME PPV event.
