Gervonta "Tank" Davis Settles Things With Romero In Six Rounds

The most highly anticipated match-ups this year took place last tonight (Sat., May 28, 2022) inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., when Gervonta "Tank" Davis (27-0, 25 KO's) defended his WBA “world” Lightweight title against previously unbeaten Rolando "Rolly" Romero (14-1, 12 KO's) by TKO at 2:39 of the six-round. 

Romero didn't come out being explosive like everyone was predicting because of his statement saying he was going to knock Davis out in the first-round. Instead he opened with his jab, using it as both a range finder and to stop Davis' attempts to get inside and land his signature left hands and uppercuts. It seemed to work for Romero as the rounds went by, with Davis using the ring to find opportunities to land shots to the body of Romero. 

Romero nearly had points taken away because of him using his elbows repeatedly as well as throwing Davis to the canvas when both fighters were in a clinch during the second round. He received several warnings from the referee though no point was taken for the repeated fouls.

Romero thought he had the things going his way as his tried to pressure Davis in the sixth round. He followed Davis towards the ropes and missed with some power punches. Davis threw a left hand counter that caught Romero clean and sent him face first into the ropes before sliding down to the canvas. Romero tried to tough it out by making it to his feet but his legs were rubbery. Referee David Fields didn't like what he saw and waived the contest off.

Saturday night, May 28, Rising Star Promotions, DHH Promotions and TCMFB Boxing in Association with Events DC showcased a eleven bout professional boxing card, Beltway Battles: Round Two that took place at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, DC. 

The main-event that featured Bowie, MD super lightweight Greg “Sharp Shooter” Outlaw, Jr. vs. Wilfrido Buelvas of Barranquilla, Colombia ended as a no contest because of an accidental headbutt at 2:28 of the first-round. 

In the co-main event Anthony Peterson of Washington, DC defeated Saul Corral Douglas, Arizona by six-round knockout. Peterson switched from orthodox to southpaw throughout the first-round to keep Corral uncertain what to look for. Peterson used his jab from both angles to keep Corral going backwards. There was some good head movement from Peterson as he slipped the punches of Corral to land his own hard counter shots to the head and body. Peterson stared doubling up his jab and followed it up with hard right hands to the face of Corral. Peterson was the faster of the two and it showed as the rounds went longer. In the sixth-round Peterson landed a hard body shot then followed it with left hook and right uppercut that dropped Corral to his knee. Corral couldn't beat the ten count at 1:06. Peterson improves to (39-1-1, 25 KO's) as Saul Corral falls (30-19, 13 KO's).   

Super bantamweight Domnique Crowder of Baltimore, MD won by unanimous decision over Yeison Vargas of Cartagena, Colombia. Crowder, the taller fighter used his height and reach to his advantage by landing his long jab in the opening round. Vargas tried to create some offense but couldn't find the range he needed. Crowder used his jab to set up some great right hands and he even landed a few straight left hands to get the attention of Vargas in the second-round. Midway into this scheduled eight-rounder Vargar finally found his way closer to Crowder and started to work the body. In the seventh-round Crowder started picking his shots and landing more often forcing Vargas to reset his offense. To close out the eighth and final round Crowder kept his jab working as Vargas tried hard to land looping shot with no success. All three judges saw the contest same with the score of 80-72 for Crowder. Dominique Crowder remains undefeated at (13-0, 8 KO's) while Yeison Vargas falls to (20-10, 15 KO's). 

Jay Stancil III of Clinton, MD  defeated Andre Donovan of Coshocton, Ohio by four-round unanimous decision in a super bantamweight contest. This was an action packed fight where Stancil and Donovan went toe to toe every round. Stancil did get an early first-round knockdown when he caught Donovan with a hard counter left hook. Donovan survived the hard shot and continued the contest with some heavy pressure that sent Stancil fighting backwards. Both guys continued their aggressive offense with showing no worries for defense as they landed hard punches to finish the fight. The contest was sent to the judges who scored it 38-37, 39-37 and 39-36 all for Stancil. Jay Stancil III improves to (3-0, 1 KO) as Donovan falls to (1-2, 1 KO). 

Max Garland of Washington, DC defeated Mike Fuller of Milwaukee, Wisconsin by first-round TKO. Garland forced Fuller to take a knee in the early seconds of the contest. Fuller stood up for the eight count, but rushed by Garland once again. Garland landed body and head shots to send Fuller down again, but this time the after standing to his feet the referee waived the contest off at 1:10 of the opening round. Garland moves to (2-0, 2 KO's) with the win over the veteran Mike Fuller.

In a heavyweight matchup Chris “The Machine” Arnold of Fredericksburg, VA defeated Lamarco Ellis of Wilson, NC by first-round TKO. It was a early round of bull rushing from the challenger Ellis. Arnold adjusted quickly by using his jab to land to the head and body of Ellis. Ellis was backed into the corner where Arnold landed power shot after power shot to cause the referee to stop the contest at 2:02 of the first-round. Arnold record improves to (5-1, 5 KO's) and Ellis fall falls to (2-8-1, 1 KO).

In a welterweight rematch "Bazooka" Joe Veazey of Baltimore, MD defeated Corey Champion of Louisa, VA by foru-round unanimous decision. These fighters met in the ring back in February earlier this year where Veazey won by unanimous decision. In this meeting Veazey did a good job of landing hard jabs as Champion tried to apply pressure. Veazey also showed some good foot work as he slid side to side causing Champion to miss a lot of his attempts to land hard punches. This contest turned out the same as the judges scored the bout 40-36, 40-36 and 39-37 all for Joe Veazey. Veazey remains undefeated with a record of (7-0, 4 KO's) while Champion drops to (2-5, 2 KO's). 

In a battle of two Washington, D.C. natives, La'Vay Lawrence defeated Hugh Hinds by TKO. This fight was one sided for Lawrence after the first minute into the first-round. The southpaw Lawrence made good use of his jab to set up some hard left hands that sent Hinds to the canvas in round one. It was much of the same in the second-round, but Hinds didn't hit the canvas. Hinds tried to fight his way back in the third-round as Lawrence kept coming forward landing hard shots to the bloodied face of Hinds. After landing more hard left hands that caused Hinds to stagger backwards the referee stopped the contest at 2:08 of the third-round. Lawrence starts his professional career off at (1-0, 1 KO) as Hinds falls to (1-4).

Washington, DC super featherweight Donnell “Blood Stripe” Poe  got a tough forth-round split decision victory over Weusi Johnson of Wilmington, Delaware. In this contest both fighters didn't take control of none of the rounds. It looked to be a tough bout to score for the judges. One judge had Johnson winning, but the other two judges scored it 39-37 for Poe. Donnell Poe moves to (2-0, 1 KO) while Johnson falls to (3-21-1). 

In a scheduled six-round super middleweight contest Nadium Salloum of Jounieh, Lebanon won by unanimous decision over Elie Augustama of Miami, Flarida by way of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This contest had a very good start as both fights did most of the fighting in the center of the ring. Salloum and Augustama added power to their shots as the rounds increased. Salloum looked to gain momentum in the forth-round by landing good counter shots that backed Augustama against the ropes to finish the round. Salloum was in control of the last two rounds when he out punched Augustama with counter shots to close the final round. Judges scored the contest 59-55, and 60-54 twice, all for Salloum. Nadin Salloum improves to (8-1, 3 KO's) as Augustama falls to (6-18, 3 KO's).

To open the card David Stevens of Reading, PA defeated Colby Courter of Saint Joseph, Missouri by first-round TKO. Stevens established himself early in the fight by sending Courter to the canvas with a right hand followed by a left hook. Courter beat the eight count but was send down for the second and final time at 2:20 of the first-round. Stevens improves to (10-7 KO's) while Courter falls to (14-18, 10 KO's).
