Hurd VS. Williams Fight Announcement Press Conference Quotes!

Unified and undefeated IBF and WBA Jr. Middleweight Champion "Swift'' Jarrett Hurd and top contender Julian "J-Rock'' Williams recently when face to face to announced their showdown at a press conference Sunday before they meet in primetime in Premier Boxing Champions on FOX and FOX Deportes action on Saturday, May 11 at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.

Tickets will be available for purchase this Thursday, March 28 at 12 noon ET through Ticketmaster (ticketmaster.com).

Here is what the fighters had to say Sunday from inside MGM National Harbor in Maryland:

JARRETT HURD

"It was very important to fight at home because that's what everyone has been asking for. I'm excited to have the opportunity and I can't wait to step in the ring.

"All of my fights are classics. I know that 'J-Rock' has been watching me and that makes him dangerous. He's coming in with a good game plan and we'll see what it is on fight night.

"Jermall Charlo is a big puncher and he landed some shots that got Julian out of there, but Julian was right in that fight. It was kind of back and forth action until Charlo landed those shots, but Charlo was hurt in that fight too.

"The fighter that I am, I wanted to go out there and close the show against Erislandy Lara. I thought I was up, but it's not in me to just go out and survive. I'm glad I did because it got me the win.

"I'm going to be victorious on May 11. I'm looking for a decisive win. I'm not saying I'm going to to get the stoppage, but it will be convincing that it went my way.

"Tony Harrison beating Jermell Charlo definitely threw a monkey wrench into the plan coming off of surgery. I'm going to go after the WBC belt regardless of who has it, but first I have to take care of Julian."

JULIAN WILLIAMS

"I'm not Erislandy Lara, I'm going to fight a completely different fight than he did. I'm going to do whatever I have to do to win. That's the kind of fighter Hurd is, so that's the kind of fighter I have to be.

"I think I'm going to win in a classic. We're probably going to have to do it a second time it'll be so good.

"My motivation are those two belts on the line. Any kind of fight with Harrison or Charlo and Hurd has nothing to do with me. I'm focused on what I have to do.

"I had to get over the loss quick. You can't dwell on that. Am I going to mope? No, it's who's up next? I can't even put it into words how hungry I am.

"Hurd is definitely a really exciting fighter. He gives that extra each fight, but I've seen some things. I have a way of wearing guys down myself. I wore Nathaniel Gallimore down fighting off my front foot and I think I'll do the same to Hurd.

"I don't know if there will be extra pressure on him fighting at home. You have to ask him. I know when I fight at home I don't feel any extra pressure. When the bell rings, a fight is a fight."

Sergey Lipinets Gets Technical Knockout Over Lamont Peterson!

(Photos by Daniel Cork)

Sergey "Samurai" Lipinets of Beverly Hills, CA defeated former three time world champion Lamont Peterson in front of Peterson's home crowd by tenth round TKO at 2:59 in the main event of the card at the MGM National Harbor in Oxon Hill, MD. After twenty five years of boxing Peterson made the announcement to retire from the sport.

It was a battle in the early rounds with Peterson seeming to have a slight edge. Peterson did a good job of landing shots to the body of Lipinets. Lipinets came on strong in the middle rounds and looked to get control of the fight.  Lipinets started to land hard shots to the head of Peterson and in the 10th round, he landed a solid right hand that wobbled Peterson.

Lipinets saw that Peterson was hurt and pressed forward and landed a shot that dropped Peterson to the canvas. After Peterson hit the canvas Barry Hunter threw in the towel to signal referee Harvey Dock to stop the bout at 2:59 of the 10th.

Peterson retires with a record of 34-5-1, 17 KO's.  Lipinets, improves to 15-1, 11 KO's.

Peterson and Lipinets Quotes:

LAMONT PETERSON

“It’s been a long career but today is the day. I’m thankful for the support. I love everyone here and I’m always going to support this area, but I’m sure it’s time for me to hang it up. I couldn’t go out in a better way here at home. This will be the last time you see me in the ring.

“It was back and forth and we were hitting each other with some good shots. It kind of just came out of nowhere at the end. That’s been happening to me more now and that let me know that it’s time for this to be the last time in the ring.”

SERGEY LIPINETS

“I feel great about the statement I made to the welterweight division. I just fought an excellent fighter. This let me know where I’m at in the 147-pound weight class. You can see that I have no problem with the size. Peterson is an excellent fighter with unbelievable skills and he’s showed me what I can really do.

“You’ve seen what I did at 140-pounds and now what I can do here. I made a big jump in competition from my last fight to this one. My new trainer Joe Goossen gets all the credit. We’ve had an excellent camp with perfect sparring that taught me a lot and got me ready for tonight.”

Jamontay Clark Win Close Decision Over Vernon Brown!

The co-feature of the FS1 telecast resulted in "The Quiet Assassin" Jamontay Clark of Cincinnati,  Oh winning a 10-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Vernon "Subzero" Brown of Chicago, IL.

Vernon Brown landed a powerful right hand that sent Clark stumbling against the ropes in round three, causing referee Kenny Chevalier to give him a standing eight count. Clark came back to land some good shots of his own on Brown to work his way back into the fight. Judges saw it unanimous for Clark with the scores of 96-93 (twice) and 95-94 to improve his record to 14-1, seven KO's.  Brown loses for the first time and he is 10-1-1, seven KO's.

Clark vs. Brown Quotes:

JAMONTAY CLARK

"I've been down before and I've seen the worst of the worst. This was nothing. I just kept grinding. I got the win and now I'm going to sit down and see what's next for me.

"I boxed a little bit better the last few rounds and used my height. I made him miss and made him over reach. That was the game plan."

VERNON BROWN

"He had the reach and I was trying to catch him. I was throwing my hook but I was a little off. I still think I won the fight. I caught him with the better shots. He was just slapping me with the hook and trying to catch up that way.

"If they want to do it again, let's do it again. Let's make it a 12 rounder. I don't think he can survive 12 rounds with me. My coach knew that I needed the knockout but it's still on to the next. I'm just going to go into the gym and work even harder."

Anthony Peterson VS. Argenis Mendez Ends With Draw!

Super lightweight Anthony Peterson out of Washinton, DC battled Argenis "La Tormenta" Mendez to a 10-round draw. Peterson used the ring to do a lot of moving throughout the contest. Both Peterson and Mendez took turns trading shots during the round. Neither fighter looked to take control of the fight.  Even during the close inside work both fighters were doing, no one gained a clear advantage in the exchanges.

Judge John Gradowski saw the bout for Mendez, 96-94 while judge Larry Hazzard,  Jr. scored it for Peterson by the same score.  Judge Paul Wallace saw it a draw at 95-95.

Peterson is now 37-1-1, 24 KO's.  Mendez is 25-5-2, 12 KO's.

Peterson vs. Mendez Post Fight Quotes:

ANTHONY PETERSON

“I can’t be that disappointed because I didn’t lose, but I was just happy to fight in front of my fans. I’ve been out of the ring for a long time and I think I did okay, but if the judges saw a draw they saw a draw. I’m not mad about it.

"Of course I thought I won the fight. I boxed, and because I felt my timing wasn't quite there, I used my feet. Normally I'd be more aggressive and walk guys down. If I can stay active, you'll see the difference in my performances.

"It's not a step forward or a step back, it's a standstill. I want to fight for the world championship and I think tonight was ultimately a step in the right direction.

“Last night was actually the first night I really studied Mendez’s fights and I knew he was good and slick. There were times I didn’t engage because of his countering. I took my time and used my jab and moved. Congratulations to him on a great fight. I’m happy to be back in the ring”

ARGENIS MENDEZ

"I didn’t think it was a draw. I know every round was close, but I think I won the fight. I don’t want to say it was easy but I think I won comfortably. He was running the whole fight and I was trying to throw counter punches and catch him.

"I could have thrown more punches in the first half of the fight. I think that was the difference, but I don't think you can win the fight on the run.

"I knew that I was on his home turf and it was in my mind to do a little bit extra. Peterson is a great fighter and he's good for the sport so I knew that I had to push the fight.

“People know that I won this fight and I’m going to keep going forward taking on the best. I give Anthony a lot of of credit. He came to fight and he tried to control the distance. I respect what he did.”
