Jamel Herring Remains Champion With Win Over Lamont Roach Jr.!

On the Top Rank on ESPN+ card at Chukchansi Park in Fresno, California Jamel Herring successfully defended his WBO junior lightweight world title by unanimous decision over Lamont Roach Jr..

In the opening round both Herring and Roach Jr. spent the majority of their time in the center of the ring. It was a good round where the fighters tested each other with jabs and body shots. The fighters tangled feet causing Herring to fall to the canvas in the second round because of his southpaw style while Roach being the conventional orthodox fighter. For the next couple of rounds both guys spent a lot of time trying to counter each other. It was Herring who did the most bodywork to open up more opportunities to land his jab. Roach Jr. did not have the punch output to match what Herring was putting out in the middle rounds, but he did land some scoring shots. Herring looked in complete control of the bout while Roach Jr. had to take more risks to put himself back into the contest. In the opening of the eighth round Roach Jr. became more aggressive by letting his hands go. Roach Jr. started stepping inside to land hooks and uppercuts. Herring did a good job of keeping his composure to continue landing his jab. In the ninth round Roach Jr. was more of a defensive fighter as Herring kept his jab working along with a few counter right hooks. In the eleventh round Roach Jr. landed a hard hook early to get Herrings attention, and another right hook that staggered Herring at the end of the round. In the final round Roach Jr. kept up the pressure as he tried to land more big shots while Herring avoided those shots with good defense. The judges scored the contest 115-113, and 117-111 twice all for Herring.

Herring remains champion with a record of (21-2, 10 KO's) while Lamont Roach Jr. suffers his first defeat and is now (19-1-1, 7 KO's).

Chavez battled his way back into the fight after his early visits to the canvas by landing some good jabs and hooks of his own. Irby started to the go to the body of Chavez, but a few of those were low. He was warned by referee Bill Clancy without any points being taken away. Irby returned to using his jab and hooks to finish the bout. The judges scored it 78-72 and 79-73 twice for Irby. Tyrek Irbys now (9-0, 3 KO's) while Joaquin Chavez fall to (9-19-4, 2 KO's).

Harris completely dominated Carneiro from start to finish of the contest. Harris put multiple combinations together throughout the bout. He definitely was the fast of the men. The speed Harris put along with some hard body shots made it even worse on Carneiro. Referee Kenny Chevalier put a stop to the contest at 25 seconds of the sixth-round. Harris remains undefeated at (18-0, 9 KO's) while Carneiro falls to (25-12, 23 KO's).

In a eight-round lightweight Dravontay "Speed" Rawls of Glenarden, Maryland won by Newark, New Jersey's Wanzell Ellison.

This contest seemed to look pretty even as both Rawls and Ellison battled throughout each round. Rawls applied pressure as he backed Ellison up and Ellison put together some of his own offense to pressure Rawls. In round four Ellison was trying to land some shots to the body of Rawls, but he went below the belt sending Rawls to the canvas in pain. Referee Bill Clancy gave Rawls the time he needed to recover before continuing the round. In the remainder of the rounds Rawls had the better offense and did a better job coming forward. Ellison was trying to stay create more offense as he countered Rawls at times. Rawls must have known he had most of the rounds in the bags as he started to move around the ring to close the bout. All three judges scored the contest the same at 79-72 for Rawls. Rawls improves to (13-1-1, 8 KOs) while Ellison gets the second defeat and falls to (11-2-1, 5 KO's).

In this junior welterweight bout that was shown on the FS2  telecast, Tazhibay used his jab to work his way inside the guard of Valasquez to put together some good bodywork. Valasquez was very aggressive in all four rounds of this contest, but he was continuously warned for holding. Tazhibay stayed with his game plan by using his jab and going to the body. In the third-round Velasquez suffered a cut on the right eye but not sure if it was from a punch or accidental headbutt. In the final round Tahzibay kept coming forward throwing shots until Velasquez held until the bell sounded. All three judges saw the bout the same at 40-36 for Tazhibay. Shyngyskhan Tazhihbay remains undefeated at (9-0, 2 KO's) while Velasquez falls to (11-7, 3 KO's).

Huertas could not beat the count from referee Bill Clancy and the bout was stopped at 40 seconds.
