UMAR Boxing Builds New Partnership With House of Boxing Champions For Worthy Cause!

It's been more than 20 years that UMAR Boxing has concentrated on neighborhood growth. Marvin McDowell, owner of the UMAR Boxing Gym that's what his goals continue to be.

Marvin McDowell:

'We just try to give these kids a chance, a fighting chance, We have an after school program, No Hooks Before Books, where I use the boxing to draw the kids in. Once the kids get in, education is mandatory, so I have a classroom, certified school teacher, computers, the whole nine yards."

"The gym needs the community's support beyond. One thing I found out, if you don't ask, people don't think you need anything, but I'm asking. The gym needs money for travel expenses, supplies and to help feed the kids. We try to put the discipline in these kids, camaraderie, self-esteem, respect, and we are the bully busters."

McDowell said that UMAR is willing to take any help offered.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh announced Thursday a partnership between UMAR and House of Boxing Champions, a national foundation that focuses on boxing safety and injury prevention.

Mayor Pugh:

"What defines the city is organizations like this, commitment by individuals in our communities, the folks who are here who want to see their city be better and are willing to put their time and effort into it. I'm excited about it,"
